Calista is one of the suburbs that followed Medina as the Kwinana town programme filled out, and like Orelia and Parmelia it takes its name from one of the early sailing ships. That shared origin is why these suburbs carry the oldest residential roof stock in the service area, and why restoration rather than repair is the usual answer here.
End-of-life roofs, in the good sense
Concrete tile of this era, still on its original rigid cement ridge mortar, has reached the point where the mortar has done its working life. That is not a crisis. It is the normal moment for a restoration, and a sound tile roof restores well.
The two end-of-life items to look for:
- Ridge and hip mortar. Cracked and crumbling, with grey chunks turning up in the gutters after a front, and caps that rock under hand pressure or sit out of line. Rebedding comes first on those sections, then flexible repointing over the lot.
- Valley iron. The metal gutters running up the internal angles of the roof, carrying water off two faces at once. They rust out quietly and let water in with every tile intact, and replacing them means lifting the tiles either side of the run.
Then the clean, the tile replacements, the sealer and two coats of membrane. Rebedding and repointing covers the backbone job and tile roof repairs covers the rest.
Industrial and commercial work is normal here
The Kwinana Industrial Area sits close by, so dust accumulating in gutters and valleys is part of ordinary maintenance in this part of the area, and sheds, workshops and commercial sheet roofing are a normal part of a local roofer's week. What we will not claim is that industrial emissions damage roof coatings, because there is no evidence for it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know whether I need rebedding or just repointing?
Push on a ridge cap. If it moves, the bedding underneath has failed and that section needs rebedding before any pointing goes on. If the caps are solid and only the surface mortar is cracked, flexible repointing over the lot is usually enough. A quote should separate the two.
Is my valley iron likely to be original?
On stock this age, often yes, and valleys are the hardest-working metal on a tile roof. It is worth having them checked whenever anyone is up there, because a rusted valley leaks without a single broken tile.
Should I paint the roof or restore it?
Paint alone is for roofs with sound capping and tiles. On this stock the capping is usually the problem, so coating first would be money spent sealing a roof that still moves. Repair, rebed, repoint, then coat.
Will the roofers quote the shed as well?
Usually, and it is worth doing together while the crew and the access gear are on site. Ask for the house and the shed as separate lines on the one quote.
