Port Kennedy is where the City's coastline turns from protected water to open ocean. North of here, Warnbro Sound sits behind Penguin Island and the reef chain. South of here, Secret Harbour, Golden Bay and Singleton face the Indian Ocean with nothing in front of them. Port Kennedy is on the open-ocean side of that line.
The marine band, and why it is measured from surf
BlueScope's guidance for specifying steel in marine and industrial environments puts standard Colorbond beyond about 200 m from breaking surf, Colorbond Ultra in the 100 to 200 m band, and stainless in the very severe band within roughly 100 m of breaking surf, measured from the high water mark.
The detail that matters is that the measurement is taken from breaking surf rather than from water in general, which is exactly why the test lands differently on a Port Kennedy house and a Rockingham Beach house despite both being coastal. Those figures are the manufacturer's own guidance for its own product rather than a building regulation, and they are not a corrosivity category, which is why this site puts no category against any suburb. Ask a roofer to name the band they are specifying to, and ask what grade the fasteners and flashings are, not just what colour the sheet is.
Mostly repairs, with gutters the recurring job
Port Kennedy is growth corridor stock, so a full restoration is rarely the right answer here. What comes up instead:
- Flashing and penetration repairs, which is where driven winter rain gets in on a newer roof
- Leak tracing after a front, because the drip is almost never under the fault
- Storm damage, including the occasional insurance job
- Gutters and downpipes, which corrode faster than the roof above them because they hold water, and which fill with leaf litter and fine coastal sand
- Rust treatment and recoating on metal, earlier here than the brochure life suggests
Gutter replacement in the right coastal grade and metal roof restoration are the two pages worth reading for this suburb.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my gutters going before my roof?
Because gutters hold water and the roof sheds it. In a marine position the standing water, the salt and the fine sand that blows in combine on the one part of the system that cannot drain itself. They go sooner here than they would inland, and we publish no figure in years because none could be verified for this area.
Does my newer roof need a restoration?
Usually not. Restoration is for roofs with failed pointing and a weathered surface. On growth corridor stock the money is better spent on the actual defect, the gutters and a clean.
What grade of fastener should be used?
That depends on the distance from breaking surf, and BlueScope publishes the bands. The point is that it is a decision someone should be making deliberately rather than defaulting to whatever is on the truck.
When should I book the work?
Autumn, before the fronts. The Bureau of Meteorology's Garden Island station records all-years monthly rainfall means of about 132 mm in July and 118 mm in June against roughly 8.5 mm in December, so the wet season is short, intense and no time to be chasing a roofer.
